Where is it?
Linsfort Beach is just outside Buncrana in Inishowen, Co Donegal. It is a beautiful sandy beach on the Wild Atlantic Way which is widely used by local people and tourists. The community were shocked when the beginnings of an oyster farm appeared on the beach earlier this year but even more shocked to hear that it was for 42 acres and they had not even been aware that a licence had been applied for!

Background Info
People may wonder why the local community are only objecting to this farm now, after the licence has been granted. The reason is that the application went ahead in such a way that the local people only became aware of it when the licence had been granted and the farm was already under construction. However the method used and the people involved are currently being investigated.

Facts
The oyster farm will eventually span approximately 1.25 kilometres of pristine sandy beach. It will cut across large sections of 5 beaches, all of which are used by the local community and are a big tourist attraction. Inishowen is not a large industrial area, our main industry is tourism so to lose one of our key features is a travesty. The people are NOT against oyster farming or employment, they just feel this farm is in the wrong location.

What can I do?
There are a number of things you can do to help. Firstly please sign our petition (link at top of this page). Contact the minister who granted this licence, Simon Coveney (simon.coveney@oir.ie) and ask him how a beach on the Wild Atlantic Way became fair game for development. Also ask him why he decided that there was no need for an Environmental Impact Study. Lobby your local TDs and councillors. For details please click the 'Read More' link.

What the People Say

  • Linsfort Beach is not just a beach for a couple of months, it's part of peoples' lives, somewhere to walk, for kids to learn to swim, a family day out. So sad to see oyster beds getting put down in this beautiful area, right on a beach this is used by so many families.

  • Last summers fun at Linsfort beach at the waters edge, the weather has been so bad we haven't got to enjoy this beautiful beach this summer, fingers crossed the weather picks up, but will we be able to play at the waters edge with the dangerous oyster cages??
